Old Spice
by jelliebeers
I will buy old spice
but not to use on myself
just to remember
Old Spice is more than just a deodorant endorsed by Terry Crews.
It’s more than a way to prevent underarm odor.
It is what a man should smell like.
I walked the aisles of Gristedes looking for the right one. They didn’t have it.
Then I looked for a CVS. Though it would have been easier to go to a Duane Reade.
However, I am banned from all Duane Reade for the next 7 years.
But we don’t need to discuss that.
CVS had a better selection, not as good as Duane Reade but better than a grocery store.
I waited until the two fat men who reeked of cigarettes got to get out of my way and started smelling all of them.
I wasn’t sure which one it was. It wasn’t the “Classic” scent. That was green and too musky.
It wasn’t “Fiji”. Not “Fresh”. Not “Pacific Surge” and not “Gameday”.
But “High Endurance Pure Sport”.
This was the blue solid that I was looking for.
I held the signature red package.
Removed the cap and the clear protective safety seal to reveal the translucent blue contents.
It was just like the deep waters in Antarctica. The perfect combination violet 2 and green 6.
I breathed in deeply.
“This is it.”
Another deep breath in.
I recently asked a male friend what kind of deodorant he uses and he told me,
“I only wear old spice when I’m going on a date or something.”
I don’t like him that way, but become instantly 15% more attracted to him because of his choice of antiperspirant.
It’s a fresh scent, slightly musky, but overall hard to describe.
It smells manly.
The only thing that’s missing is the smell of sweat.
The scent is most obvious when you are laying next to someone who is wearing it.
When you are laying with them, with your head on there shoulder. Usually during cuddling.
Then you can smell it.
On a dirty, wrinkled Gap t-shirt you can smell it.
It’s a comforting smell, nostalgic
I was having a private moment until I realized, I am in CVS
The fluorescent lights were beaming on me and I was standing there daydreaming holding a container of deodorant.
I feel alone. Old Spice smells like loneliness.
I have a headache from breathing in so many synthetic fragrances and propylene glycol.
When I get home, I open the package and take a nap next to a bar of deodorant.
